Easy Line and Wash: Coastal Landscapes

Easy Line and Wash. In this free live workshop, you’ll learn how to draw and paint a coastal landscape.

It’s been a while since my last workshop, and I thought we’d try something simple for this one and learn how to paint, some water, mountains, boats and figures.

This is a popular subject for beginners and experienced watercolourists. There’s something magical and calming about these coastal scenes with boats and water.

I always like to paint the lighter and warmer areas first, and in this scene, I painted the sand, areas of the background and sky first. Most of the white areas in the boats are from the white that I left on the paper.

Barmouth, Wales – A4 sheet, Cold-press paper.

The water was quite dark in the reference photo, and I’ve made sure to recreate that darkness, but I’ve also lightened the sand in the foreground to emphasise the shadows better.

I added some figures as I thought it would add some interest and life to the scene – something that I thought was lacking in the original reference photo. It doesn’t take much at all to put them in!
