Watercolor Painting for Beginners: Introduction
In this Watercolor Painting for Beginners article and workshop, we’ll draw and paint Melbourne in a line and wash style.
This scene was requested by one of my patrons Evonne U. I hope you like the photo and resulting line and wash painting.
Melbourne Scene: Reflection
I like the way this one turned out, especially the tram in the center of the road!
One of the things to keep in mind in a scene/reference like this is to carefully observe the light source. You have to make sure that the shadows all run in the same direction.
In this scene, I emphasized the darkness under the background buildings. I also added shadows to the left side of the buildings to imply the light source from the right.
The overlapping shapes and subjects were tricky to handle. To start off, I created a very light outline of the buildings and the point where they met with the ground. Then I added all the figures, trams, and cars in the foreground first. This helps give your drawing a sense of depth and it means that you don’t draw over the top of the background shapes.
